History by Tony Howe:

The charter of the Southern Ry in Mississippi was amended on November 6, 1920 changing the name of the company to Columbus & Greenville Railroad and placed the company in receivership. The company was sold at receiver's sale on August 6, 1923, and renamed the Columbus & Greenville Railway. The railroad dieselized in 1946 with the purchase of 5 Baldwin roadswitchers, even though steam remained as backup power through 1951. The railroad was included in the Illinois Central Gulf merger finalized August 10, 1972. After several years of deteriorating conditions, new owners bought back the line from Columbus to Greenville and resurrected the C&G on May 30, 1975. In the last few years, the line from West Point to Greenwood has been out of service, and the C&G was sold to Genessee & Wyoming group of shortlines in 2008, but the Columbus & Greenville name has still been retained.
