History by Gil Hoffman:

On August 26, 1905, W. W. Carre & Co., of New Orleans purchased at a receiver’s sale the sawmill, railroad equipment and timber holdings of the J. A. Favre Lumber Company at Favreport in Hancock County, MS.

On December 7, 1908 W. W. Carre & Company purchased two mills from Herlihy, Haas & Herlihy, one at Kiln, and the other at Bayou Talla, both in Hancock County. The Bayou Talla mill included a logging railroad half a mile long and one locomotive. The company maintained it headquarters and main sawmill in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The sawmill burned in 1912 and in December of that year the logging railroad and equipment were sold to the Stern Foundry & Machinery Company, of New Orleans. In January 1913 the remaining property at Kiln was sold to the Edward Hines Lumber Company, of Chicago, Illinois, and the operation was reorganized as the Jordan River Lumber Company.

An ancient 4-4-0 numbered 8 said to have been taken near Kiln is thought to belong to W. W. Carre.
