History by Gil Hoffman:

W. S. Carter, formerly of Hawkes, in Jones County, built a sawmill at Townsend, Kemper County, about 1912. This mill was of the circular type with a cutting capacity of 25,000 feet per day. Townsend was on the Sanoody Valley Railroad, 6½miles east of DeKalb. The mill cut out in the spring of 1918, after which the sawmill and logging equipment were advertised for sale.
