History
by Gil Hoffman:
The
Coney Lumber Company was incorporated at Baxterville, Lamar County,
on March 29, 1913, by J. T. Coney, G. W. Covington, R. L. Covington, all of
Hazlehurst, and O. E. Coney, of Eastabuchie, with authorized capital stock
of $100,000. In June 1913, a circular sawmill with a cutting capacity of
40,000 feet per day was completed and placed in operation. O. E. Coney, for
many years associated with the Eureka Lumber Company, at Eastabuchie, was
president of the company and G. W. Covington was secretary.
On
March 8, 1918, the Coney Lumber Company sold all its timber land, amounting
to 4,668.45 acres, to O. E. Coney for $5,000. Five days later the sawmill,
logging railroad and all equipment were sold to L. O. Crosby for the
Crosby-Bonds Lumber Company for $26,500. The mill was actually operated as
the Ferguson Lumber Company by the three Ferguson brothers, James,
George and Dock, until 1921 when it cut out.
