History by Gil Hoffman:

In February 1922 Joe M. Griffin, of Laurel, purchased 25,000 acres of pine timber in Leake, Neshoba and Winston counties from the Burnside Land & Timber Company. Soon after, construction of a 100,000 feet daily capacity band mill at Burnside, Neshoba County was begun and completed about July 1922. The J. M. Griffin Lumber Company, which operated this mill, was incorporated in Delaware with office at Wilmington.

The sawmill was equipped with an 8-ft. band saw, a gang and a double edger. Other facilities were a planing mill, dry kilns and a power plant plus 23 miles of logging railroad. The company also built a town for its mill workers which included a school and churches. Both rift and flat grain flooring were manufactured in this plant.

On August 16, 1923 the sawmill, logging railroad and timber holdings were sold to the Reynolds-West Lumber Company, of Texas, for approximately $4,000,000.
