History
by Gil Hoffman:
On
November 22, 1889 Nick P. Johnson, formerly of Whitney & Johnson,
Summit, Pike County, leased a sawmill site for five years from A. B. and M.
A. Bonds, the lease to run from January 1, 1890 to January 1, 1895. The
location was about two miles west of McComb and half a mile west of the
Little Tangipahoa River. In early 1890 Johnson built a circular sawmill on
the site with a cutting capacity of 15,000 feet per day. The specialty was
car sills and bridge timbers. Known timber for this mill totaled some 600
acres in the immediate vicinity. In March 1891 a small shingle mill was
added.
