History
by Gil Hoffman:
On
July 16, 1886, George W. Robinson purchased the sawmill plants and equipment
formerly belonging to Emil DeSmet from H. C. Vaughan, Receiver. The price
was $65,000 and included two sawmills, planing mill, logs on the boom and
river equipment. To operate this property the Pascagoula Lumber Company was
incorporated in 1887 with George W. Robinson as president. The DeSmet mills
were transferred to the new company by Robinson on July 14, 1887. The
sawmills were of the circular type with a combined cutting capacity of over
100,000 feet per day, of longleaf yellow pine. Logging of these mills was
done on the Pascagoula and Dog rivers and their tributaries. Numerous
logging contracts were awarded by the company to operators as far north as
Hattiesburg for logs to be floated down the rivers to the boom. A tramroad
was also in operation by 1888, according to the Northwestern Lumberman.
On February 20, 1897, the sawmill plants and equipment
were sold to the Robinson Land & Lumber Company by the First National
Bank of Pensacola, Florida, for $30,000. This sale included 6,820 acres of
timberland.
