History
by Gil Hoffman:
On
July 16, 1910, the Poplarville Saw Mill Company, of Lexington, KY,
purchased the sawmill and timber holdings of the Poplarville Lumber Company,
at Poplarville, Pearl River County, for $220,000. The Poplarville Sawmill
Company was incorporated at Lexington, KY, on July 27, 1910 by George W.
Headley, Jr., E. L. Hutchinson and others with authorized capital stock of
$50,000. G. W. Headley, Jr. was president of the company.
In
March 1914 the plant was closed because of poor business conditions. It was
rebuilt In the latter part of 1915 and reopened in late January 1916.
Cutting capacity of the rebuilt mill was about 75,000 feet per day of
longleaf yellow pine. About November 1918 the mill cut out and the machinery
was moved to Tiger, Choctaw County, Alabama, on the Alabama, Tennessee &
Northern Railroad. On February 5, 1919 the mill site, sawmill buildings and
company houses were sold to D. D. Durham.
The
Poplarville Saw Mill Company had the same ownership as the Louise Lumber
Company, at Hawkes, Jones County, which cut out in July 1915. During the
period of shutdown of the Poplarville mill, George Headley moved to Hawkes
where he ran the Louise Lumber Company.
