History
by Gil Hoffman:
The
B. T. Toomer Lumber Company was a copartnership originally composed
of B. T. Toomer and J. R. Jackson, both of Hattiesburg. On October 16, 1906,
they purchased the sawmill plant and timber holdings fomerly belonging to
the Mahned Lumber Company from the Gulf States Investment Company for
$75,000 with $21,667.67 paid in cash. A mortgage was placed on the property
for the remainder of the debt. B. T. Toomer held a two-thirds interest in
the mill property and J. T. Jackson, a one-third interest. The mill of the
Mahned Lumber Company, which had been owned by J. A. and J. B. Kennedy, was
located on the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City Railroad at Dixie (later
Mahned). On September 21, 1907, B. T. Toomer and J. R. Jackson sold their
interest to J. S. Toomer, who assumed the debt to the Gulf States Investment
Company.
Initially
the mill was logged entirely by oxen, but in March 1907, a logging railroad
was constructed. The railroad lasted until December 20, 1909 when the rails,
along with 27 yoke of oxen and seven 8-wheel wagons were sold to Leatherbury
& White of Mobile, Alabama.
As
a result of the failure of J. S. Toomer to continue making payments on the
mortgage, default was declared and the assets of the company were sold at
public auction on November 7, 1910, to the Gulf States Investment Company.
On July 1, 1911, they in turn sold the lands formerly owned by the B. T.
Toomer Lumber Company to a partnership composed of J. R. Jackson, R. L.
Bennett, and P. R. Perkins, of Hattiesburg, and B. M. Fulton, of Mahned.
