HISTORY by Tony Howe:

Breland was platted as a townsite on the Mississippi Central Railroad, but never developed into a town as hoped. The railroad had a siding located here, as well as a warehouse and 3 section houses for employees maintaining the track in the area. A spur to a large gravel pit owned by the railroad was built south from Breland by the Pearl & Leaf Rivers Railroad, but it was abandoned by 1906. When the railroad was realigned east from Breland in 1923, a short stub of the original mainline was left in place until 1936.
