History
by Gil Hoffman:
On
July 13, 1883, J. W. Whitney purchased 320 acres of longleaf yellow
pine timber land, three miles southwest of Summit, MS, and built a circular
sawmill on this land. The daily cutting capacity was about 10,000 feet.
In
early 1886 he formed a partnership with Nick P. Johnson, a lumberman from
Alabama, after which the firm was known as Whitney & Johnson.
Total timber acreage bought between 1886 and 1888, when the last was
obtained, was 1,138. In July 1889 the mill cut out and was dismantled.
Afterward,
Whitney may have established another sawmill operation around Greenwood, MS,
while in early 1890 Johnson built a small yellow pine mill a few miles to
the south of the old Whitney & Johnson mill.
