| The Gulf & Chicago
Railroad was organized August 1, 1889 when line was bought at foreclosure
sale of the Ship Island, Ripley & Kentucky which operated between
Middleton, TN and Ripley (25 miles) and the Gulf & Ship Island
(Northern Division ) which ran between Ripley and Pontotoc (37 miles). The
Gulf & Chicago was leased to the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City on
July 1, 1903. On December 1, 1909, the Gulf & Chicago and MJ&KC
were officially merged to form the New Orleans, Mobile & Chicago
Railroad.
